In October 2000, the first game on InstantChess was played.
On 18th August 2001, the first 'member of chess club' was
registered. Today, 31st December 2019 with 104 993 228 games
having been played, InstantChess has served its very last
game.
The idea of creating InstantChess was born from the
experience of delivering a small technology solution for a
professional chess word. This is when our team realised
InstantChess mission which was to last for 20 years. We
decided to liberate chess and bring this fantastic game back
to the people. We developed InstantChess as we thought about
people who don't want to use chess as a tool for measuring
superpowers, but play and enjoy the game every morning to
wake up their brains, every noon to have relief from work,
and every evening to meet and chat with someone from across
the globe. It worked, and during its golden years,
InstantChess was on the top of online chess. Our small team
was continuously developing InstantChess during these years
20 years until the end of 2018 when we realised that we need
to pass the torch to a new generation of chess lovers
fortunately, they are there the community who work on
Lichess.
Lichess is the ideal successor to InstantChess. It is an
advanced open-source chess server powered by volunteers and
donations the best concept for a people-centric
website. Function-wise, Lichess has almost everything that
InstantChess has. Although we badly miss country flags and
the intelligent way to avoid time-wasters, we believe that
Lichess will quickly catch up on these. Lichess is the
fastest growing and developing chess place at the
moment.
To play familiar InstantChess chess pieces and the board at
Lichess, simply click 'Start Game'.
Finally, we would like to say a big thank you to every
single player who has stayed with us for a such long time
(some for all 20 years). Your enthusiasm and excellent
feedback encouraged us to keep going for all those
years.
We are proud of having been an essential part of the
evolution of chess.
Good luck with your games!
Sincerely yours,
Andrey Matveev https://www.linkedin.com/in/andreyvm/
